Description
Overday to Alexandria from Cairo
Travel to Alexandria, the ancient Greek-Roman capital, and explore its splendid monuments : Qaitbay Citadel, the Catacombs, Saint Catherine Church, Pompey Pillar and the sphinx. Alexandria is the second biggest city of Egypt. It owes its name to Alexander the Great, who built it. As reflected in the variety of its monuments and the miscegenation of its inhabitants, Alexandria used to be for most of its history a cosmopolitan town. Attached to the Mediterranean Sea, the city is particularly appreciated for its cool climate and the smooth breeze of the sea. Located at only 3 hours from Cairo, it’s the favorite holiday destination for locals, and certainly also for you.
Day 1

In the morning your guide will meet you at the lobby of your hotel to go to Alexandria by air conditioned vehicle, 2 hours far from Cairo.
Venture into the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. Mixing the best of Egyptian, Greek and Roman funerary art, this roman necropolis was one of the seven wonders of the medieval world.
Discover then Qaitbay Citadel, built on the vestige of what used to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world : the lighthouse of Alexandria. Erected by Sultan Ashram Sayf El Din Qait Bay the citadel was specially constructed to protect Alexandria from the invasion of the Ottoman Empire.
Savor a nice lunch in a local seafood restaurant which Alexandria is famous for.
Continue your journey by visiting the Great Library of Alexandria, one of the ancient seven wonders. The Library used to keep preciously an incredible number of scrolls. Unfortunately, the original one, dated to the 3th century, was totally destroyed by a fire. You will be able to visit the new library which is both a tribute to the ancient one and a try to restore to Alexandria its former glory.
Nearby, you can’t miss the monumental Pompey Pillar. The pillar was erected in the glory of the emperor Diocletian in 291, therefore it has nothing to do with Pompei ! This impressive structure is located on the ruins of the temple of Serapis, the Egyptian-Greek god and protector of Alexandria. Next to the Pillar, you can admire a sphinx built in honor of Serapis.
Enjoy a tour in the city accompanied by our Egyptologist guide. Stroll in the streets and discover the local areas that make Alexandria so special.
At the end of the day you will be driven back to Cairo.

Tipping
Tipping in Egypt known as “baksheesh” is a way of life in the Middle East. Locals themselves usually tip who provides them with service. It is customary and even expected to tip small service providers. To make things as easy as possible and avoid hassling, Bob Marley Travels has developed a tipping attitude where your tour leader will collect a contribution from everybody at the start of your tour and use this to tip anybody who has provided services to the group as a whole. A guideline for tipping is minimum $4 USD per day per person, you can pay in USD or the equivalent local currency (preferably local currency). If you feel that any service provider failed in maintaining or delivering good service, please bring it immediately to the attention of your tour leader to be able to improve our service partners and so a deduction of tips can take place. To not confuse you how much to tip the Tour Guide so we suggest you tip minimum 3$ per person per day, and at the end of the day it’s not a mandatory option.
